character survey
Body and Appearance
Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
Julian is 6'4" (188 cm) and weighs about average for a man his age and size (idk man, somewhere between 200 and 210?). He has a broad chest and wide, masculine shoulders, with a trim waist and narrow hips. Most of his length is in his long legs. His build is somewhat muscular—he is definitely quite fit, but not a beefcake by any means. A visual (from the waist up): here. Another visual, full body, allows you to appreciate the rather nice booty he has: here.
How old is he?
No canon age, but we have some really smart cookies in the fandom who have figured his age between 37 and 39, see source here! I tend to lean more middish-lateish depending on context and canon point, but prefer a comfy 36 if I must choose a number. Julian would simply say he's "old enough to know better."
Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Generally good posture, shoulders back, spine straight. He has a tendency to cross his arms or put them on his hips. Often stands with one leg crossed over the other, toe on the ground, too. When he's sitting, his posture is godawful though. Slumped over, elbows on the table, hands in his hair. He sleeps on his back, one arm up, the other across something (pillow, himself, other person...), legs stretched out.
How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
Physically healthy. He once began to contract the plague but its spread was halted and he is no longer sick or contagious. He doesn't eat nearly as much as he should and barely gets enough sleep, though. He does have a unique ability that causes him to heal rapidly when sick or injured, caused by a magical mark on his throat. Using this mark, he is also able to cure others of injuries and afflictions by taking them onto himself. When he does this, he also recovers relatively quickly, but using the mark to heal others is considerably taxing for him and it takes him awhile to regain his strength. Outside of this, no ailments.
How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Dramatic. In motion, Julian takes long strides and has a relatively quick pace. He doesn't necessarily talk with his hands all of the time, but when he does he gestures broadly and almost exaggeratedly to help make his point. There is a lot of flourish to his actions, usually for the purpose of being comical and entertaining (also possibly a distraction from the real issue). When he tells stories, he likes to act out the fun parts for extra pizzazz. This is also true of his facial expressions: lively, almost exaggerated, very easy to read and sometimes seemingly comically overblown. When he frowns, he really frowns. When he laughs, he lets loose. You get the picture.
How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Julian might not come across as conventionally pretty, but he is very handsome and attractive, and he also has a charming and magnetic personality. He's a big flirt, but also has a very genuine and helpless sort of sweetness to back it up, so he doesn't give off the typical floozy vibes you might expect from him. He also can, and does, talk with his body, and he's gotten pretty good at it. That said, he doesn't have a propensity for sleeping around as much as he might act like he does (but that's not to say he doesn't—just not as much as you'd think).
Generally, Julian would say he knows he is attractive, but he has quite a lot of insecurities. Most of them are internal rather than physical, but there are some things about his appearance he's not a fan of. Like his narrow hips and waist, his right eye, and his nose (his nose is his best feature tbh).
Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
His skin is pale with quite a lot of sun-spots and beauty marks, especially on his back and shoulders. He actually bears very few scars, although this may be because of his rapid healing. His hands are rough, a sign of the manual labor he often did a lot of when he was younger (and sometimes still does).
Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Auburn, short and wavy/curly. Probably cuts it himself and wears it Sexily Messy. It's soft, has a tendency to be oily if he hasn't showered recently, and he uses a masculine-smelling shampoo (and also the similar-smelling body wash/cologne).
He also has a fairly regular amount of body hair on his chest, arms and legs, a bit lighter red in color than the hair on his head. Catch him late in the day and you might spot a five o'clock shadow. He grows it fast.
What color are his eyes?
Steel gray. Left eye is normal; the sclera of his right eye is entirely bright red, a telltale sign of the plague (he was cured before it could afflict both eyes). The color of his right eye seems to be a paler silver than the other. He almost always wears an eyepatch over his affected eye. He can in fact see out of the right eye with relative clarity and only a little blurriness. It tends to squint independently of the left eye though and reacts a little bit slower to light.
He also has very dark circles around his eyes and bags under both. Boy needs a nap.
Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
He has the "murderer's brand" on his left hand, see visual here. This tattoo was put on him when he was imprisoned under accusation of murdering Count Lucio. That image also shows his magical mark, which manifests on his throat and glows when he uses his healing powers (see above). When not in use, the magic mark is not visible.
What are his chief tension centers?
Honestly, everywhere. Julian carries a lot of nervous tension throughout his body, but especially in his neck and shoulders. It can be difficult for him to relax. His knots have got knots all down his back and he gets cramps in his wrists and fingers from long bouts of writing. He may also occasionally clench his jaw in his sleep.
What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Black, red, black and red, gray, and some off-white. He dresses like a goth theatre kid who dumpster dives behind Spirit Hallowen. Typically he wears something like this, or like this (so basically same shit but with an open, flowy white top). He also sometimes wears a plague doctor mask.
Unless he's decidedly comfortable around someone he typically keeps his eyepatch on at all times (people might think he's contagious!) and his gloves (to hide the brand).
You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Briefs. The kind that don't leave pantylines ;)
Speech
What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Julian has a smooth voice a little on the deeper side. He has a slight Russian accent (or its in-universe equivalent). His volume vacillates wildly depending on the situation, but at rest he can actually be a little soft-spoken. Also mumbles out loud to himself kind of a lot when he's alone.
How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Typically more on the soft and even side, but "typical" for Julian is to wildly change tone, pace, and cadence based on his every fleeting emotion. If you get him flustered—and that's very easy to do—he talks fast, stammers, his pitch goes way up and he starts babbling.
Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
It isn't distinct, but there is a Russian twist to his accent, yes. Also, dare I say, a little bit piratey? (Ahoy!) Other than that, he has no verbal quirks besides saying "uh, um, er" type words quite frequently from time to time, especially when he's nervous, unsure or embarrassed, but often just in regular conversation, too.
What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
Julian canonically speaks seven languages with varying degrees of fluency, but it's not stated which ones. Presumably he knows the "survival basics" to get by in most places of the world he lives in at the very least, with more fluency in the languages he lived closest to or visited the most.
I'm going to say, at least for now, that he's fluent in the in-universe equivalents of Italian, Russian and Spanish, and a bit less proficient in German, Arabic, Swedish and Korean. (Not sure where English works into all of this, maybe he just doesn't speak that, who knows.) I don't know that there are geographical equivalents for all of these, so it's subject to change; for the sake of RP, unless the language is completely unique to one's world (like Al Bhed in FFX, for example), it might be safe to say "oh, he knows a little of that" in a thread if needed (or not).
Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
Should he think about his words? Yes. Does he? Pretty much absolutely not. He tries to, he really, really does. Sometimes he even overthinks what he's going to say to the point where it all becomes a jumbled, complicated mess. But the fact is that Julian reacts impulsively to his feelings, and that includes in his speech, speaking his thoughts out loud and being quite emotional in his delivery. Visually, Julian wears his heart on his sleeve, but it's also very easy to hear it in his voice, too. He often talks faster than he thinks and just muffs it right up (oopsie doopsie).
Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
Pretty eloquent! Julian has kind of an embellished, theatrical way of speaking, just like the rest of him. He is an intelligent and booklearned person, so it isn't at all just an affect, but he speaks a lot more "flowery" than what's probably strictly necessary. It doesn't really change, it... only gets more dramatic the worse he feels, honestly.
He's also categorically "a talker" and has been pointed out more than once in canon as the sort of person who does all the talking for everyone. He loves to tell adventure stories and various anecdotes and seems to be very good at it. He knows how to garner a captive audience, at least.
Mental and Emotional
How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Both. Julian is fairly well-educated, having studied medicine and science formally and having practiced both for quite a few years. He also is a fan of the arts and likes to read (although he honestly reads less often than he should, because his imagination is so much bigger than the confines of pages!), so I would say he's intelligent and fairly well eloquent. He isn't a genius by any means, and in fact has been described as a "hack" doctor probably because of his impractical methods (LEECHES ANYONE?) but I think this probably is more of a satire in reference to the old-fashioned medical practices of the times (his canon is kind of more of a Medieval-ish fantasy type of setting).
That said, Julian is also the son of merchants and spent a long time on and around ships, in fishing and tourist villages, and then later as a fugitive, so he has picked up quite a bit in the way of street survival. He can be a real rogue at times, although normally what gets him out of sticky situations is his charm rather than his wit.
Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Julian is the type of person to either talk or act through his entire thought process from start to finish, and he feels every single emotion that passes through along the way as acutely as if they were each the end result of the process. He isn't necessarily impulsive, because he does reason through his thoughts, but he reacts based on the strongest feeling he has and can be very emotions-driven. Once he has set his mind on what he feels is correct, it's hard to dissuade him away from that even using common sense and logic. He will always, without fail, follow his heart first and his head second, in spite of his best efforts to use both.
The sort of thinker that Julian is is hard to pin down because it also is very much based on the feelings he's experiencing in the moment. He can be quite optimistic, encouraging and confident one moment and completely defeatist, miserable and kicking himself the next. It seems as though he has a bad case of "all or nothing" thinking—things are not at all black and white with him (it's always "complicated" and shades of gray), but he's quick to put all his eggs into whatever basket he's holding and skip merrily to town with it.
What kind of education has the character had?
Julian studied medicine formally in Prakra in his teens or early twenties, and at some point practiced field medicine under the tutelage of Nazali. This would be where he gained most of his actual medical experience—he meets another character in canon on a battlefield, so it can be assumed he was deployed for those sorts of purposes and is probably more of an EMT than a proper physician. Later on he opened a clinic in Vesuvia to treat patients suffering from the Red Plague, and eventually became employed by the palace to search for a cure for the plague.
As far as his general education, Julian was taught to read and write by the women who raised him after he was orphaned. He's competent enough to read complicated medical journals and tomes, but he doesn't seem to be that good at science and probably isn't very good at math, either.
What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Medicine, also foreign languages and customs (for what it's worth considering the garbage practices that were the standards of his time). Julian's parents were merchants, so he knows his way around a market and can score a deal (or swindle his way out of paying for something). He also spent a lot of his time on or around ships and knows a thing or two about sailing... and also pirates, with whom he lived and worked for some time aboard a spice ship as their physician.
Something he would like to invest more time in is acting. He loves the theatre and enjoys entertaining others and would greatly enjoy the thespian life. He's participated in plays and also plays the vielle, and if his life would stop being a Roman tragedy for five seconds he'd spend a lot more time doing those things.
Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
An introverted extrovert. Julian seems like the outgoing type and he does in fact make friends and acquaintances quite easily. He has a very attractive and magnetic way about him that people are drawn to and a sort of endearing genuineness that is difficult to ignore. On top of that, he doesn't much care for being alone as he gets lonely and experiences feelings of abandonment easily. He tends to attract attention whether he wants it or not and appears, at least on the surface, to thrive on that. And in a way he does, as it brings him great satisfaction to please others and spend time entertaining and receiving positive attention, being someone who craves love and acceptance. However, he does become drained easily and will retreat into a shell sometimes very suddenly. Usually with comments about how no one understands him.
It's hard being a Pisces sun, Leo rising. It's hard, and no one understands.
Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Um... yes. The answer is yes. His temperament is everything. To say Julian has moodswings is a bit of an understatement, but also not entirely accurate. The fact is that he is completely driven by his feelings almost all of the time, and it makes him unpredictable, sometimes even to himself. He does not have good control of his emotions. That isn't necessarily to say that Julian is a wildly emotional hot mess that can't function, just that he struggles with the separation between his head and his heart and feels very deeply and passionately about pretty much everything. He finds it difficult to remove himself emotionally from most situations, which can compromise his decision-making.
Generally, Julian has a good-natured and even-tempered personality. He isn't particularly quick to anger, although he is quite sensitive and can become upset easily. He has a lot of nervous energy and can sometimes come across as very high strung one moment, and then relaxed and playful the next. When at ease, he is caring and attentive, likes to make jokes, and flirts often. Under the surface, he harbors a lot of stress, guilt, and self-loathing. He blames himself for nearly everything that goes wrong and recklessly attempts to prevent disaster by throwing himself into situations he can't control, but will pass it off as something more lighthearted to avoid talking about difficult subjects and upsetting people... until he unloads it all at once in a bout of oversharing.
How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Friendly, but not trusting. He acts more outwardly open to people than he actually is, although he is also quick to let down his guard around people around whom he begins to feel comfortable. His main reason for keeping some kind of distance is because of his wanted status for murder, but he generally relies on his charm and quick thinking to get him out of issues (or also his familiar, Malak, who likes to warn him about impending danger, not that he understands what the bird is saying).
It should be noted that Julian gets attached to people and winds up in relationships with them really quickly—ones that are short-lived and basically an emotional whirlwind. Be careful with this one.
Is he more likely to act, or to react?
In terms of getting things done, he will act first and worry about the consequences afterward based on what he thinks (or more likely feels) is best. Socially, he's more reactive. Julian will often set the stage for things to happen by pushing them where he wants them to go, but is then often hesitant to see it all the way through.
Which is his default: fight or flight?
Fight. This wasn't always the case, as he truthfully prefers not to hurt people if it can be avoided (sometimes a bitch gotta), but all that changed after he received his mark. Once he was able to rapidly heal from injuries, throwing himself into danger became option number one. Sometimes he does it just for the shock value. He's downright reckless about using himself as a human shield and doesn't take care to protect himself very well. That said, he's decently handy in a fight and presumably learned some swashbuckling from pirates.
Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
He's got a pretty good sense of humor and knows how to make others laugh, being a natural entertainer and people-pleaser. It's pretty easy to make him laugh, too. Just be careful not to roast him too hard or he'll start taking it personally.
What does he fear?
Losing people, or allowing those he loves to be hurt. Julian will recklessly put himself at risk to protect the people he cares about. Having lost his parents when he was young and also being unable to save many, many people during the Red Plague (including someone he cared about but failed to realize was sick) instilled a deep sense of guilt in him that he is constantly attempting to subvert. Such is his mania over protecting people that he will make decisions for them based on what he thinks is the "best thing" to keep them safe without even discussing it with the other party. This honestly extends to everyone around him to an extent, though—he feels responsible for the lives of everyone he comes into contact with and feels deeply burdened and afraid of his inability to save everyone. But still he tries anyway.
Also, this.
What are his hopes or aspirations?
Opening another clinic again, and also being able to sail the seas and go on adventures traveling the world the way he used to. He also just wants to be surrounded by people that love him, who he doesn't have to be afraid of hurting with his actions or having taken away from him.
What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
There are things he doesn't especially want to admit to, such as his fear of losing people, but truthfully Julian is an open book and will admit his deepest secrets readily. He expresses his thoughts and feelings without much regard for keeping things private and can sometimes tend to overshare once he's comfortable with talking to the other person.
He would say he doesn't want his loved ones finding out what a horrible person he is, though. Because he's the worst and does everything wrong and bad, you know.
Relationships
Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Julian's parents were killed in a shipwreck when he was young. He was old enough to remember the incident clearly (his age is figured at somewhere around 10 or 11). He and his sister were the only survivors of the wreck. After that, he was taken in by Mazelinka and a group of grandmothers in Nevivon, where he stayed until he left to study medicine in Prakra (presumably in his twenties).
Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He has one younger sister, Portia. They were the sole survivors of the shipwreck that killed their parents and were raised together in Nevivon. They were quite close and Portia idolized him, following him around everywhere. They learned to sail when they got older. Julian left Portia behind with their caretakers when he went to study medicine, and it was only after he had been accused of murdering Count Lucio that he wrote to her, however Portia hadn't learned to read or write and didn't know what the letter said. They wound up being reunited in Vesuvia, where they were both overjoyed and emotional to find each other alive and well. They love each other very much, bicker like siblings do, and are still quite close. He's very protective of her.
Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He presumably has no other living blood family.
Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Mazelinka is his "honorary grandma" and was responsible for saving him and his sister after the shipwreck. She helps get him out of Vesuvia when he is accused of murdering the Count, and after his three year stint on the lam, he stays with her at her house to lay low from time to time. She takes care of him and makes sure he eats and rests, and he helps take care of the place.
Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Julian doesn't really have a "best friend" outside of maybe the Apprentice in his route. The Apprentice came to work with him as a understudy helping to aid those suffering from the plague. He was so caught up searching for a cure that he failed to notice the Apprentice had contracted the plague themselves until it was too late and was unable to save them, causing him great grief and guilt. During his route they reunite and become quite close while searching for a way to exonerate him for a murder he didn't commit.
Does he have other close friends?
Once upon a time he was very close to Asra and Nadia, who he met while working at the palace. The three of them became very close and bonded during a difficult time for the three of them, but would later lose a lot of their memories of each other thanks to their pacts with the Arcana. In particular, Julian began a (at the very least, physical) relationship with Asra, though it didn't last long before it soured on both ends and they became bitter toward one another. Nadia, at least at the beginning of his route, believes him responsible for killing Count Lucio, her husband, and plans to have him hanged. So suffice it to say he doesn't have any close friends anymore.
Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He does make friends easily, and also seems to do it wherever he goes, often by funny coincidence. People are often drawn to his charms and drama, although it seems he has trouble with maintaining long-term relationships of any nature, including platonic. Most people tend to drift out of his life, or he out of theirs.
Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Family, but he also puts a lot of stock in "found family," so his closest acquaintances are like a family to him, too. Blood of the covenant is thicker than the waters of the womb, after all.
Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
At the beginning of the week? Single. By Friday? Taken. By next Sunday night? Single again. Julian doesn't really do "hookups" in the traditional sense—sometimes, yes, he has flings and one night stands, but he tends to get attached to the people he's attracted to. Thank god, he's never been married. He'd like to be someday, though.
Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
Nazali, the doctor he studied under in Prakra (and one of Nadia's sisters), was probably his first major one. His latest is either Asra (in other routes) or the Apprentice (in his).
What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Acceptance. Julian wants most for someone to love him as he is, and to feel that he can be himself around that person. The sort of person that suits him best will prompt him to change and grow as a person without really having to push him to, because he will feel inspired, almost artistically, by that person's spirit and presence. Trust is also an important one. So is a fun-loving and adventurous spirit, someone who isn't afraid to take risks and live it up, but also knows when to be gentle and settle down.
Honestly though Julian scarcely screens the people he dates carefully. He throws himself at the first pair of open arms he sees because he desperately craves affection. It's just that he so rarely knows what to do with it when he has it.
Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
No, but he would like them someday. He's (cautiously) confident he'd make a good dad. You know. If ever he can stop being a HORRIBLE BAD PERSON and get his life together, etc.
Does he have any rivals or enemies?
Not especially, although being wanted for murder has damned him in the eyes of some of the population of Vesuvia, so there's that (the other half lauds him, because Lucio was a shithead, it's just that he was a fun shithead). He doesn't have much love for the Count himself, just not so much that he felt the need to kill him (although he was willing to for the sake of stopping the plague, but listen, It's Complicated)... he's also really, really not a fan of Valdemar or the other palace courtiers. But especially not Valdemar. That creep put him through some really fucked up things down in the deepest bowels of the palace.
What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Comfortably pan. He falls easily and falls for anyone, sex and gender aside.
How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Loves it, can't get enough of it. He is a sexual person and enjoys sex casually, but as stated above it actually is somewhat difficult for him to hook up frivolously with strangers most of the time because he gets attached. Not always, but often, because attraction is a romantic concept for him, and sex can just as easily tip over the edge into lovemaking for him. Pisces are really thorough and devoted lovers, y'know, they go all in. That said, yeah, he can fuck around if he wants to and come out mostly unscathed, but it's not a shocker if he leaves a trail of broken hearts in his wake (although he would say his is the broken heart, naturally).
What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
His biggest turn-on is pain. He's into that masochist shit and likes to be hurt. Not as keen on hurting others in kind, though, but he can be persuaded if his partner is into it. He's also into subbing, but makes a terrible dom. Some dirty talk is okay, too, but he is a bit sensitive and if it gets too harsh it can ruin the mood for him; instead, he likes that real nice talk, being praised and cooed at and all that affirming feel-good stuff. In general, he likes it intense and hands on—lots of kissing, touching, full-body contact.
There's not a lot he hasn't tried once and what he hasn't, he typically always will do at least once. And also: the boy is a bottom. He just is. Couldn't top his way out of a wet paper bag. But if you ask him to, he'll do it. He'll do anything. Dedicated, remember?
Beliefs
Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac sign? How well does he fit type?
Yes, I made an astrological chart for him here (based on his "modern" birth year of 1981)! He is canonically a Pisces, and the other two major ones are a Moon sign in Gemini and a Rising sign of Leo. The Leo rising is likely where Julian gets a lot of his charisma and showmanship from. Pisces are ordinarily more gentle, shy, and quiet, and their artistic pursuits and dramatic whims are more subdued, an undercurrent to the peculiarities of their often "unique" personalities that cause them to stand out from the crowd (and prefer it that way). They are caretakers and tend to be genuinely altruistic to the point of almost martyring themselves at times, which is very much in line with Julian's personality. Leo rising gives them that big bang and pizazz, the charisma and rambunctiousness and eagerness to entertain, to be noticed, and to pursue the attention and affection they desperately crave. A Leo rising can often demonstrate leadership qualities, but the dreaminess and hesitation of their Piscean inclinations often trips them up at the finish line. They are excellent at coming up with ideas but notoriously bad at seeing them through to realization. Oftentimes a Pisces sun/Leo rising will seem remarkably "un-Pisces-like," as they may not be proficient at all in the artistic talents that Pisces are known for, like art and music, or not nearly as "mysterious and mystical" as their sun sign would suggest. That often tends to come from a Leo rising's restlessness, if you will—they could be so very good at many things, if they applied themselves, but are often too unfocused or doubt themselves too greatly to try.
A Gemini Moon makes for a very sociable person, someone who is curious and comes across as "interesting." People may be drawn to them and find their odd quirks and talents fascinating, while the Leo in them has the "center stage" attitude to play off of that interest and turn themselves into a full-blown spectacle... whether they mean to or not. They are witty but easily distractible, can be fickle, and have a strong propensity for being manipulative. Oftentimes these three major elements working in tandem make for a person who will act somewhat thoughtlessly and almost entirely upon their emotions. They have all the qualities to be deeply thoughtful and reflective, but won't think before they leap.
Also, he's an ESFJ on the Myers-Briggs, defined as "the Consul," which you can read about here.
Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
No, not really at all. He's skeptical of magic and mystical things and there doesn't really seem to be an organized religion for him to not pay attention to in the game anyway.
Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
His moral code is basically the same sort of one that any law-abiding citizen would follow. That said, he holds himself to
a much higher standard than he might others, while also... continuously flouting the rules when it suits him. He's probably more of a "chaotic good" on the alignment scale. Wants to do right, often doesn't, either by accident or quite intentionally, with the excuse of it being "for the best" or for survival at the time.
How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Curious but skeptical. The only "beliefs" that there really are to talk about in his world involve magic (if there are other canon religions they aren't really explored). Julian is aware of it and willingly requests a tarot reading, he also apparently can give readings himself somewhat. He also has a latent ability to perform magic and could theoretically become quite good at it with training. He's not a big fan of magic mostly because he doesn't understand it, but typically is open to it when it's being done around/to him.
What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
Doesn't really seem to have any, he is an open-minded kind of person as far as things like race, sexuality etc etc.
Not a fan of snakes though. Too much squeezing.
Daily Life
What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt?
Julian is rich in foreign currencies... he's not currently able to hold steady work because of his fugitive status, but he has lots of random currencies like pirate dubloons and coins from other countries and continents that he passes off as proper money when he needs to pay for something. He does do odds and ends where he can to make a few actual bucks, but for the most part he's deadass broke.
What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
He used to be a rather well-respected physician, enough so that he was hired by the palace to work with their team to help develop a cure for the plague (although this may have potentially had something to do with the fact that Julian was the field medic that amputated Lucio's injured arm on the battlefield some years prior, establishing a prior connection). Since the Count's murder, however, he is a fugitive and is wanted on threat of execution, so his social status is... tenuous.
However, Julian is really well-liked in Vesuvia both because of his work helping sick people and because a lot of folks (especially the poor ones) really hated Lucio, so he gets some undeserved credit for ridding the city of the ol' goat. It's kind of a "I'm voting for Cady because she pushed Regina in front of a bus" situation.
Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
He has his own place to live in the South End of Vesuvia, however his actual home is not explored in canon. Considering South End is a poor part of town, it probably isn't very fancy or well-kept. He also sometime stays with Mazelinka in a spare "room" (mostly just a curtained off little area he can sleep in) at her house, also in South End.
Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
What money?
Alternatively: leeches.
What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
Julian is a doctor, and his skill is questionable. He's been called a "hack" in canon but he does seem to genuinely know his stuff, although again there does appear to be a lot of satire centered around the common medical practices used back in ye olden days. The fact that he was respected as a physician and skilled enough to be hired by the palace suggests he's among the best there is in Vesuvia, though, and it's implied that his clinic both during the Red Plague and at the end of his upright route is pretty successful.
He loves to help people and does enjoy his work, but he'd be happiest out at sea traveling the world, going on adventures and maybe even dabbling in the merchant life like his parents once did.
What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
As stated before he does like to act and entertain, play music, and generally amuse people at his own expense. He also likes drinking and spends a lot of time at the Rowdy Raven, a South End bar full of rough types that like to fight and play cards. The people there don't snitch, so he can kick back and have a pint or six without having to worry unless the guards come.
What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
Oh he drinks booze like a fish, also black coffee! Just an unhealthy boy all around. His favorite alcoholic drink is called a Salty Bitter and it's basically salted ginger beer in a stein. His favorite food is lobster, and he's a fan of seafood in general. He also likes pistachio ice cream and figs.
He's been noted to skip meals frequently, with Mazelinka commenting that he won't eat unless you make him. He probably also forgets to sleep or just... doesn't, given the dark circles around his eyes. That said, he isn't underweight, so he does alright by himself.
